Robert Edward Auctions (REA) recently wrapped up their February auction with resounding success, raking in over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show was a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which fetched an impressive $75,000, setting a new record for its version and demonstrating the insatiable demand for rare vintage sports cards.
The auction also saw a PSA GOOD 2 graded Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series shattering records for its condition with a sale price of $15,000. Enthusiasts and registry builders were drawn to the event, especially with the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card soared to an auction high of $19,200, marking the highest price for a non-Hall of Famer card from this set in its grade.
Featuring a total of 2,732 items, REA’s auction showcased a diverse array of collectibles. Other notable sales included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4 card selling for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6 card fetching $18,000, and a complete set of 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 cards selling for $12,000.
Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed his delight at the auction’s broad appeal and the enthusiastic participation from the collector community. He teased future attractions for REA’s March and Spring Auctions, suggesting a vibrant outlook for the hobby.
This recent auction not only highlights the enduring allure and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for exciting opportunities ahead. With the upcoming Encore event scheduled for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA continues to establish itself as a premier platform in the sports collectibles market.
