Finding himself at Jaspy’s Sports Cards & Collectibles on Saturday, December 7th, Alec’s first visit to the shop turned out to be legendary. While breaking open packs of the 2024 Topps Update Jumbo in-store, he stumbled upon a remarkable discovery: the 1/1 MLB Debut Patch autograph redemption for Baltimore Orioles All-Star Jordan Westburg.
Initially unaware of the card’s significance, Alec’s realization dawned with the shop’s explosive reaction. Maren Jaspersen, the co-owner of Jaspy’s, reminisced on the thrill of the moment, expressing how everyone at the shop was ecstatic for Alec, especially given that it was his debut visit.
The MLB Debut Patch autograph cards, introduced in 2023 Topps products, are highly sought-after in the collecting world. Each card showcases a distinctive patch cut from a player’s jersey during their MLB debut, coupled with their autograph. Alec’s luck didn’t stop there. On Tuesday, December 10th, he returned to Jaspy’s and opted for Breaker’s Delight boxes known for their favorable odds of low-numbered cards. Opening them at home via FaceTime with friends, Alec experienced another stroke of luck by pulling the live MLB Debut Patch autograph card for Jose Ferrer.
In disbelief, Alec recalled his reaction, exclaiming how he ran around the house yelling in sheer disbelief at his extraordinary fortune. His journey back into collecting began during the pandemic, serving as a bonding activity with his brother, who is currently recuperating from back surgery, finding joy in the shared hobby.
Regarding the precious cards, Alec decided to part ways with the Westburg card, selling it to an Orioles supercollector, while holding onto the Ferrer card for his personal collection.
