Michael Jordan Card Shatters Records at PWCC Marketplace Auction

PWCC Marketplace’s November Premier Auction has once again made waves in the world of collectibles, with a rare Michael Jordan card setting a new record. The card in question is the highly sought-after 1998 Skybox Premium Stars Rubies edition, which was sold for an impressive six-figure sum of $216,000. This sale establishes a new record for this particular parallel card, making it the second most expensive Star Rubies card ever sold.

The 1998 Skybox Premium Stars Rubies card series has played a significant role in creating rarity within the hobby of collecting. It introduced serial-numbered cards to collectors, adding an element of exclusivity and desirability. Alongside other iconic cards from this series, such as Skybox’s Precious Metal Gems, the Star Rubies edition has become particularly valuable in the eyes of enthusiasts.

What sets the 1998 release apart is its historical significance. It was the last Skybox set to feature Michael Jordan before his retirement in 1998, making these cards even more coveted by collectors. The intricate foil details and edge-to-edge design of these cards add to their beauty, but also make them susceptible to wear, further enhancing their rarity.

The record-breaking Michael Jordan card that was sold at the auction received a grade of PSA 7. This means that only four cards of this particular type have received this grade, with a mere five others graded higher. With such limited availability and high demand from collectors, it’s no wonder that the card fetched such an impressive price.

But the auction didn’t stop at the Michael Jordan card. Other notable items also reached remarkable heights. A PSA 1 (MC) graded 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 card, despite its less-than-perfect condition, sold for an astonishing $35,400. This demonstrates the enduring popularity and value of vintage sports cards, even in less-than-ideal states.

Kobe Bryant, another basketball legend, also proved his collectible worth at the auction. A Kobe Bryant 1999 Upper Deck Game Jerseys patch auto card set a new record by selling for $32,700. The combination of Bryant’s legacy as one of the greatest players in NBA history and the scarcity of this particular card contributed to its impressive sale price.

The auction also showcased the growing interest in other sports and collectibles. A 2020 Topps Dynasty F1 card featuring Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas garnered $20,400, revealing the international appeal of Formula 1 racing and the growing popularity of collecting cards related to the sport.

The November Premier Auction at PWCC Marketplace has once again demonstrated the incredible value and demand for rare and iconic sports cards. Collectors and enthusiasts eagerly participate in these auctions, hoping to secure their favorite athletes’ cards and contribute to the thriving world of collectibles. With each record-breaking sale, the significance and allure of these cards continue to grow, solidifying their place as highly coveted pieces of sports memorabilia.
